Judge: Joyce Dumas, nature photographer
Nature photographer Joyce Dumas has a career background in both photography and writing and finds she is happiest when she can combine the two crafts. “I find myself thinking about how I’m going to write about a photography experience while I’m in the field shooting. When I sit at the computer, writing about the shoot leads me to thinking about how I can do things differently next time. It’s a symbiotic relationship that hopefully improves the techniques of both.” The analysis involved in describing the thought processes behind making a photograph was jokingly called “The Dumas Method” by a student and the label, now used in book and lecture titles, took root.
Joyce has shown her work in regional galleries as well as at juried fine art shows throughout the Southeast. She teaches photography and digital imaging classes and leads photography workshops in Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. She co-founded the Blue Ridge Mountain Photographers guild, chaired the BRMP National Photography Exhibit, and served on the board of the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association. She has served as a juror and judge of both regional and national photography competitions.
