In this meeting, Scott Gibson will discuss his approach to successful street photography with emphasis on:
(1) the law and the photographer,
(2) camera use and techniques,
(3) where to go and not to go to get the best “street photography” photos, and
(4) what makes a great photograph.

Scott L. Gibson is a former Professor of History at Western Michigan University and the author of “The Yeas and the Nays, Key Congressional Decisions 1774-1945,” along with numerous articles that have appeared in professional journals and national magazines. 

For the past 25 years, Gibson has spent countless hours photographing the great cities of Europe and the United states.  Today many of his photographs can be found in distinguished private collections and international corporations.  On Veterans Day 2011, several of his photographs from Arlington National Cemetery were displayed in the White House.  Former war correspondent and Pulitzer Prize nominee, the late Art Harris, wrote, Gibson’s Paris photography captures the mystery, mystique and charm of a city I know and a city I love.  I can’t get his photographs out of my mind.”

Much of Gibson’s photography involves what is commonly known as street photography.  This genre, which began in Paris in the 1930’s, involves photographing people being themselves in everyday life, at work, in social settings, political protests, public celebrations and on the street.  Much of Gibson’s work in Paris focuses on cafe life. Gibson is currently working on a photographic essay of reflections from the Great Lakes to the lakes, rivers and canals of Europe.
